Nepal’s diplomatic calendar is heating up with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri scheduled for a two-day visit to Kathmandu on May 11-12. This precedes the much-anticipated India trip by Nepal’s new Prime Minister Balendra Shah, signaling robust high-level engagement between the two countries.

The Kathmandu Post reports that Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai extended a formal invitation to Misri after thorough bilateral discussions. PM Shah, who accepted PM Modi’s invitation, may delay his visit slightly to align with his administration’s key agendas, as per Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal.

Over 40 bilateral platforms facilitate cooperation on vital issues including defense, hydropower, farming, frontier issues, commerce, and more. Misri’s trip will likely address technical groundwork for these mechanisms.

Post the formation of Shah’s government in late March, Nepal has been a hub for top diplomats. Recent visitors include a senior US official and a high-ranking Chinese envoy, reflecting Kathmandu’s growing geopolitical relevance.

Khanal’s recent meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mauritius emphasized fast-tracking joint ventures. Discussions covered project progress, hurdles, and fresh avenues for partnership in Nepal’s priority sectors.

As Nepal’s top donor, India contributed $107.8 million in 2024-25, funding diverse projects from roads to renewable energy. Misri’s outreach aims to streamline these efforts, paving the way for Shah’s visit and long-term strategic alignment in the region.
