Tensions between Russia and Germany spiked as Moscow called in the German ambassador over a sensitive Kyiv rendezvous. Alexander Lambsdorff faced a stern dressing-down at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday, as revealed by spokesperson Maria Zakharova to local press.
At the heart of the dispute: a meeting between Bundestag foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter from the CDU and Akhmed Zakayev, leader of the banned Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Russia considers the group a terrorist outfit, with its leaders on international wanted lists.
The Russian statement lambasted the encounter as evidence of German interference, allegedly arranged with Ukrainian assistance. It highlighted Kiesewetter’s supposed endorsement of the group’s disruptive actions in Russian border areas like Belgorod and Kursk, and calls for joint operations targeting Russian communities abroad to destabilize the country.
‘We have conveyed a strong protest to the ambassador regarding this Kyiv meeting,’ the ministry declared, warning of severe repercussions for Germany’s provocative steps. Moscow framed it as collaboration with terrorists, threatening Russia’s security.
This clash arrives against a backdrop of strained ties due to the Ukraine war, where Germany has been a key supporter of Kyiv. Experts suggest it could prompt retaliatory measures from Russia, further complicating EU-Russia dialogue.
With both powers issuing ultimatums, the episode highlights deepening divides and the risky interplay of domestic politics with international conflicts.
