In a significant boost to bilateral economic engagement, India and New Zealand inked a landmark Free Trade Agreement on Monday. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described it as a ‘historic’ pact that transcends conventional trade, opening avenues for strategic cooperation and long-term alliances.

This FTA promises to supercharge exports by dismantling tariffs and barriers. Indian agriculture products like fruits, veggies, coffee, spices, and cereals will flood New Zealand markets duty-free. Textiles, pharma, and IT services get a massive push, while New Zealand’s dairy and education offerings tap into India’s growth story.

Zero tariffs on all Indian merchandise exports is the crown jewel, making trade seamless and transparent. Fast-track import mechanisms will strengthen supply chains, directly benefiting farmers, MSMEs, artisans, women-led businesses, and youth startups.

Job creation looms large in labor-heavy industries: textiles, garments, leather goods, footwear. Manufacturing hubs in autos, electronics, machinery, and plastics will see investment inflows. Pharma and chemical exports are set for exponential growth.

The services sector shines bright too. Enhanced ties in IT, finance, education, tourism, and media will showcase India’s skilled talent pool. Key wins include 5,000 three-year visas for Indian professionals, access to 118 service sectors, and MFN benefits across 139 sub-sectors.

Women and young innovators benefit from dedicated SME collaborations, incubation support, and digital marketplaces linking them globally. As Jaishankar noted on social media, this agreement redefines India-New Zealand relations, fostering mutual growth in an interconnected world.
