Passenger convenience takes center stage as Indian Railways locks in a 20-coach configuration for the iconic Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express. Effective April 28, this upgrade from 16 coaches includes three extra AC chair cars and one executive class coach on trains 22961/22962.
This busy 491-km route, linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad in 5.5 hours with halts at Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara, has seen unrelenting demand. Business execs, students, commuters, and leisure seekers all benefit from amplified capacity.
Originally a peak-hour fix, the expansion is now etched in stone, mirroring Railways’ pledge to sustain trust through proactive scaling. Across the network, Vande Bharat’s footprint has grown to 162 trains: 90 with 8 coaches, 38 with 20, and 34 with 16.
FY 2025-26 numbers dazzle with 4 crore riders, up 34% year-on-year. From 2019, 1 lakh+ trips have ferried 9.1 crore passengers at over 100% occupancy, proving unmatched reliability and appeal.
Why the craze? Blitzing travel times by 45%, spotless cabins, onboard delights, and clockwork punctuality have redefined rail travel for India’s ambitious millennials.
Safety and luxury define the fleet: Kavach tech, vibration-dampening designs, auto doors, swivel seats in executive class, and bio-toilets for accessibility. Mini-kitchens serve hot meals, with charging points, CCTV, and coolers ensuring a seamless ride.
Pair this with the Gandhinagar-Mumbai Vande Bharat for robust regional links, fostering economic ties. This move isn’t isolated—it’s Railways’ blueprint for a demand-responsive future, where Vande Bharat keeps pace with a transforming India.
