Chennai’s film circles are abuzz with a high-stakes title controversy that could sink an indie director’s ambitious debut. Vijay Avathaar’s ‘Kara’, a gripping tale inspired by India’s massive crocodile, is locked in battle against Dhanush’s big-budget ‘Kara’, creating chaos in online searches and promotion.
In a candid interview Monday, the director disclosed three-plus years of grueling work. Bhavani Entertainment leads production with Premnath co-producing, featuring stalwarts Master Mahendran, Jiva Thangavel, Mota Rajendra, and Sripu Amman in key roles.
‘Our film is complete and slated for May 15 theaters,’ Vijay shared. ‘Yet, Dhanush’s April 30 release from Wells Company—with the same English title—is burying us digitally.’
Pre-January, Google and social media favored Vijay’s ‘Kara’ in results. Now, promotional blitz for the star’s thriller dominates, vanishing the debutant’s visibility. This 25-year industry veteran fears fallout on business and releases.
Framing it as a quest for fairness, Vijay stressed, ‘No ill will toward their blockbuster potential. We invested heart and soul; now our name is at stake.’
He called on Dhanush, the producers, and legal authorities: ‘Help us reclaim what’s ours. Creators deserve their spotlight.’
This showdown underscores vulnerabilities in branding amid star power, with Vijay’s dream hanging by a thread as cinemas await.
