External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s stop in Jamaica has marked a new chapter in India-Caribbean relations, highlighted by the presentation of advanced mobile hospital systems to aid disaster response. Meeting Prime Minister Andrew Holness in Kingston, the two leaders explored avenues to amplify collaboration across sectors.
Posting on X, Jaishankar noted the productive exchange, including PM Modi’s warm regards, and commended Holness’s dedication to bilateral progress. The event saw Jamaica’s key ministers—Health’s Christopher Tufton and Foreign Affairs’ Kamina Johnson Smith—in attendance.
India formally donated ten BISHM Cubes, portable medical facilities engineered for swift setup during crises like hurricanes or earthquakes prevalent in the region. This gift stands as a testament to enduring friendship, disaster preparedness commitment, and technological prowess.
Jaishankar’s itinerary spans May 2-10 across three Caribbean countries linked by the historic Girmitiya legacy of Indian indentured laborers. Engagements will cover diplomatic dialogues with counterparts on trade, security, and multilateral concerns.
Preceding the official meets, he toured Old Harbor, a poignant landmark of early Indian settlement in Jamaica. Engaging with diaspora members, Jaishankar lauded their steadfast preservation of cultural roots, from festivals to family traditions.
This diplomatic outreach reinforces India’s role as a reliable partner, blending historical bonds with modern innovations to address contemporary challenges effectively.
