The Assam Assembly elections delivered a thumping endorsement for the BJP, with powerhouse leaders scripting emphatic victories while opposition stalwarts bit the dust. At the forefront, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma retained Jalukbari with an overwhelming 89,434-vote lead, reinforcing BJP’s unassailable position.
A parade of BJP victories lit up the scoreboard. In Dispur, Prajyot Bordoloi cruised to win; Guwahati Central saw Vijay Gupta’s decisive edge; New Guwahati went to Dipul Ranjan Sarmah. Pijush Hazarika dominated Jagiroad, Jayanta Mallabarua prevailed in Nalbari, and Dr. Ranoj Pegu held firm in Dhemaji.
The wins kept rolling in with Bhuban Pegu’s success in Jonai, Manab Deka’s in Lakhimpur, and Bhupen Borah’s in Behpuria. NDA partner AGP’s Tapan Das added to the glory from Demoria, highlighting coalition strength.
Opposition camps, however, nursed deep wounds. Congress’s high-profile Gaurav Gogoi conceded Jorhat by more than 23,000 votes. Debabrata Saikia lost Nazira, Meera Borthakur Dispur, Diganta Barman Barkhetri, and Nandita Das Hajo-Sualkuchi.
Assam Jatiya Parishad endured setbacks with Lurinjyoti Gogoi in Khowang and Rajen Gohain in Barhampur. Independent Jayanta Das and AJP’s Kanki Chaudhary also bowed out in Guwahati Central.
BJP’s 82 seats dwarf Congress’s 19, with BPF and AGP at 10 each. AIUDF and Raijor Dal notched two seats, AITC one. This landslide paves the way for BJP’s third straight government, marginalizing rivals and affirming voter faith in its development agenda.
