A new era in Indo-Pacific trade dawns as India and New Zealand finalize their Free Trade Agreement today. New Zealand’s PM Christopher Luxon couldn’t contain his enthusiasm, tweeting that a deal long dismissed as unfeasible by generations is finally materializing.

Reflecting on his Delhi visit to meet PM Modi over a year back, Luxon noted their joint resolve to kick off talks. ‘Many said for decades it was impossible. Tonight, we make it real,’ he announced on X.

Dubbed a once-in-a-generation opportunity, the FTA grants Kiwi exporters entry to India’s 1.4 billion-strong market and its ascent to the world’s third-largest economy. Expect surges in rural employment, community wealth, and family opportunities from boosted farm and horticulture sectors.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal and NZ’s Todd McClay will sign the pact at Mandapam, India. Aiming to catapult bilateral trade from current levels to $5 billion in five years, it arrives at a critical juncture with global trade flows disrupted by Middle East volatility.

The agreement unlocks $20 billion in potential investments from New Zealand into India over 15 years, fueling growth in manufacturing, infrastructure, services, tech innovation, and employment.

Indian firms gain tariff-free access to New Zealand. In return, India offers cuts or waivers on 95% of NZ goods, including wool, coal, wood, wines, seafood, cherries, avocados, and blueberries.

Protecting local interests, India excludes dairy, onions, sugar, spices, oils, and rubber from concessions. NZ gets phased relief on kiwis and apples via quotas, full duty-free for sheep meat, wool, forestry items, and eased tariffs on manuka honey, infant foods, and select seafood.

Mobility provisions shine bright: 5,000 yearly visas for Indians in professions from IT and engineering to healthcare, teaching, construction, yoga, traditional medicine, culinary arts, and music instruction, with stays up to three years.

As signatures are exchanged, this FTA symbolizes resilient diplomacy and economic vision, promising mutual gains in a turbulent global landscape.
