In a pivotal discussion in Tripoli, Libya’s Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah engaged with UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Hanna Tetteh to chart a course out of the nation’s election impasse. The agenda centered on a comprehensive UN-supported roadmap aimed at bridging political divides and fast-tracking national polls.

According to official channels, Tetteh briefed Dbeibah on efforts to merge rival government entities and streamline preparations for nationwide voting. The ‘mini-dialogue’ recently facilitated by the UN marks the roadmap’s first step, targeting agreement on election laws and the formation of the High National Elections Commission.

Dbeibah voiced strong backing for actionable measures that preserve Libya’s civil state framework. He emphasized transparent processes to enact electoral rules, heal institutional fractures, and reflect voter aspirations—essential after over a decade of turmoil post-Gaddafi’s 2011 fall.

The North African country remains cleaved: Tripoli hosts the internationally backed unity government, while the east aligns with General Haftar’s forces. Tetteh pledged continued UN assistance in forging consensus and fostering conditions for inclusive elections.

This comes as rumors swirl about executive overhauls, drawing sharp criticism from Misrata activists who see it as undermining independence. On April 22, UN officials highlighted how economic woes and governance clashes exacerbate Libya’s fragility, underscoring the high stakes of these negotiations for stability and prosperity.
