  • Heavy rain, lightning kills 8 people in Jharkhand

    By PTI

RANCHI: At least eight people were killed including one in Ranchi due to heavy rain and lightning strikes in Jharkhand in the last 24 hours, an official said on Monday.

Parts of Jharkhand have been receiving incessant rains since Saturday evening with several spells of heavy rains, which damaged several culverts, and diversions and also claimed several lives.

A 28-year-old man fell in an overflowing drain in Hatma Saraitand in Ranchi’s Lalpur area on Sunday. The body of the person, identified as Dev Prasad alias Chotu, was recovered around 2. 5 km away from the place of occurrence on Monday morning.

“The body of the person was recovered this morning and postmortem has also been carried out. He had fallen in an overflowing drain triggered by heavy rain on Sunday,” Gonda police station in-charge Ravi Thakur told PTI.

In Jhakhand’s Jamtara district, a woman and her three children, aged between one-and-a-half years and seven years, were killed in lightning strike on Sunday, police said. The incident happened at Chandadih Lakhanpur, Naryananpur police station in-charge Dilip Kumar told PTI.

A child died after a wall made of a mud house collapsed in Bokaro district, while two girls, aged nine and 12 years, drowned in a pond in Mayapur village in Palamu district, police said.

Several diversions and culverts also washed away in heavy rain. A diversion on NH-39 in Ranchi’s Ratu area was washed away due to incessant rain on Sunday night, which affected the traffic movement on the Ranchi-Daltonganj route. Water levels reached near the danger mark in several rivers of the state.

Even though rain intensity has decreased in the state capital Ranchi, the weather department has issued an orange alert for parts of Lohardaga, Gumla and Simdega, where heavy to very heavy rainfall might occur on Monday.

Charge of Ranchi Meteorological Centre, Abhishek Anand said that widespread rainfall continued over Jharkhand under the influence of a low-pressure system. Parts of the state might be receiving rainfall till October 4, he said.

  • Ranchi: Eight fetuses found in 21-day-old baby

    By PTI

RANCHI: In a rare case, as many as eight fetuses were found in the abdomen of a 21-day-old baby during an operation in a private hospital here, doctors said.

The size of the fetuses range from three centimetres to five centimetres and they were settled inside a cyst in the abdomen, Dr Md Imran, who performed the surgery, told PTI.

In medical terms, it is called fetus-in-fetu (FIF), a rare entity in which one malformed vertebrate fetus is enclosed within the body of its twin, according to the journal of National Library of Medicine.

“As per the papers and journals available so far, one fetus was reported in most of the FIF cases. Case of eight fetuses has not been reported from anywhere yet,” Dr Imran claimed.

He added that FIF is very rare and it occurs in one in five lakh live births.

The baby was born on October 10 in a government hospital in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district. The doctors found a lump in the abdomen and suggested to the parents to operate on it immediately, as it might cause problems in the stomach.

“The baby was admitted to the hospital when she turned 21 days. In the initial diagnosis, a cyst or tumour-like substance was found. It was located below the diaphragm. We decided to remove it through operation and it was performed on November 1. Then, we discovered eight fetuses one after another inside the part,” he said.

The operation was successful and the baby’s condition is normal right now.

The baby has been kept under observation and she will be discharged in a week, he said.

The head of Rani hospital, Ranchi, Rajesh Singh told PTI, “Since it is a rare case, we are preparing it to be published in international journals.”

  • Jharkhand police bust tear gas shells, use water canons to disperse Tana Bhagats tribal community gherao

    By PTI

LATEHAR: Police burst tear gas shells and used water canons to disperse members of the Tana Bhagat tribal community on Monday when they gheraoed the civil court in Latehar, about 110 km from the Jharkhand capital Ranchi, and brickbatted it.

The tribals locked the chamber of the principal judge for about five hours demanding the closure of the court alleging that the district administration was ignoring the constitutional provisions in vogue in the area.

The adamant agitators refused to heed to the persuasions of the district administration and police officers, who had rushed to the site, and began brickbatting injuring seven police personnel.

Among those injured were a police inspector and three women constables, deputy superintendent of police Santosh Mishra said.

They also raised slogans demanding the closure of the court and blocked the roads to it leading to the police bursting of tear gas shells and the use of water canons to control the situation.

The entrance to the court had been locked by the police following intelligence reports of the agitation and police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order but the agitators forced their way into the court’s premises, he said.

The protestors, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Tana Bhagat Sangh, claimed that functioning of courts and employment and entry of outsiders in Latehar district is prohibited under the 5th schedule of Constitution and threatened to continue agitation till the government institutions, administration, police and the judiciary are handed over to them.

The district is known to be affected by naxalite activities.

Latehar, a tribal district, is under the 5th schedule which prohibits or restricts the transfer of land by or among members of the scheduled tribes, regulates the allotment of land to members of the STs and regulate the carrying on of business by money-lender to them.

With the exits and roads to the court blocked by the protestors, the police helped the judges, the lawyers and the court’s officers leave the court premises through the rear exits.

The protestors were finally chased away by the police in the evening and police force was deployed in and around the court premises, Mishra said. Any casualty among the tribals was not yet known.

The security in and around the residences of the judges and the court officers has been tightened, the DSP added.

  • Ranchi: Poster politics begins over removal of pics

    Express News Service

RANCHI:  Accusing the Hemant Soren-led government of playing appeasement politics, former chief minister Raghubar Das has alleged that state machineries have knelt down before the communal forces, also protecting them in order to secure the ruling party’s vote bank.

The remarks come following the prompt removal by the police of posters showing pictures of rioters that were put up in Ranchi, appealing to people to identify them and inform the cops of their whereabouts.

“Under whose pressure the posters were removed should be a matter of investigation,” Das said, adding, “I also demand the district administration to be extra alert on the coming Friday so that any untoward incident is avoided.”

According to Das, SIT probe is an eyewash and the matter should be referred to central agencies for a fair probe. Taking a dig at the Hemant Soren government, BJP legislative party leader Babulal Marandi said, “Ranchi Police removed the posters under the pressure of JMM; it is quite evident that the people sitting in power are still engaged in manipulative politics.”

State BJP chief Deepak Prakash also questioned the connection between protesters who appeared in the posters and the ruling alliance. JMM central general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya dismissed the allegations, saying, “I feel that putting posters of wanted protesters may further disturb the social harmony in the state.”

Police seek public help to identify rioters The Ranchi police have appealed to people to share video footages and photographs related to the Friday violence with them, assuring them that their names and addresses will be kept confidential
