  • Hemant Soren drops plea against arrest after SC questions ‘conduct’

The Supreme Court on Wednesday criticised Hemant Soren for his “blameworthy conduct” of not disclosing complete facts in a plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) even as the former Jharkhand chief minister’s counsel withdrew the plea.

A vacation bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta verbally observed that Soren had availed “parallel remedies” by filing two separate pleas, one challenging his arrest and another seeking bail, but did not disclose it to the top court.

Soren also did not disclose that his regular bail already stands dismissed by the trial court, the bench observed. It disapproved of the “crafty drafting” of Soren’s petition and told senior advocate Kapil Sibal that the court expected “some candour from your client”.AllUttar PradeshMaharashtraTamil NaduWest BengalBiharKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKeralaMadhya PradeshRajasthanDelhiOther StatesSibal said it was his own mistake and not of Soren. “It is my personal fault and not of my client,” he told the bench. “The client is in jail and we are lawyers acting for him. Our intention was never to mislead the court and we have never done it.”Speaking for the bench, Justice Datta verbally observed that it appears that “the person in custody is not acting with bona fide”.To this, Sibal responded that Soren “is not in touch with us. It is not his (Soren) fault at all”.Sibal withdrew the plea after the bench said it would dismiss the same.

Pointing out factual dissimilarities between the case of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Soren, both challenging their arrest by Enforcement Directorate (ED), the apex court on Tuesday had sought to know whether Soren’s plea would be maintainable especially after his regular bail has been rejected and the fact that a special court has taken cognisance of a prosecution complaint (equivalent of a charge sheet) filed by ED against Soren and other accused.

  • ED opposes JMM leader Hemant Soren’s interim bail plea in SC

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate opposed in the Supreme Court on Monday former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren’s plea seeking interim bail in a money-laundering case linked to an alleged land scam to campaign in the Lok Sabha polls. In its affidavit filed in the top court on Soren’s plea against his arrest and for interim bail, the probe agency said the materials on record establish that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was involved in the acquisition and possession of properties in an illegal manner which are proceeds of crime. A vacation bench headed by Justice Dipankar Datta is scheduled to hear Soren’s plea against his arrest and interim bail on Tuesday. “Various Statements recorded under section 50 of PMLA, 2002, which establish that property admeasuring 8.86 acres, situated at Shanti Nagar, Near Lalu Khatal, Bariyatu is under illegal acquisition, possession and use of Hemant Soren and the same has been done in a camouflaged and concealed manner,” the agency said. Opposing the interim bail of Soren for campaigning during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the ED said, “It is relevant to note that the right to campaign for an election is neither a fundamental right nor a constitutional right and not even a legal right.” AllUttar PradeshMaharashtraTamil NaduWest BengalBiharKarnatakaAndhra PradeshTelanganaKeralaMadhya PradeshRajasthanDelhiOther StatesThe probe agency said that there is an active attempt on Soren’s part to subvert the investigation by misusing state machinery and project the proceeds of crime as “untainted through his stooges”. Soren was arrested on January 31 in the money-laundering case linked to the alleged land scam after he resigned as the Jharkhand chief minister. He has challenged a May 3 order of the Jharkhand High Court that dismissed his petition against his arrest by the ED. He has also sought interim bail for campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls till the court delivers its verdict on his plea against his arrest.

On May 13, referring to the top court’s recent order in a money-laundering case involving Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Soren sought interim bail for campaigning in the election.

  • Sandeshkhali: Police arrest Trinamool leader Shibu Hazra amid accusations of torture and assault

Trinamool leader Shibu Hazra, accused by villagers for torturing people and assauling women in Sandeshkhali, was arrested by police on Saturday. This is second major arrest after arrest of Uttam Sardar another close aide of absconding Trinamool leader Sheikh Shajahan.

DGP Rajeev Kumar said, “We will be reviewing all the 19 areas where Section 144 is imposed. In a day or two we will remove it in some areas to ensure people continue to lead a normal life..”

“Some questions were raised about imposing Section 144 when there was no loss of life. It was because some people were trying to give a communal colour or spread lawlessness around the incident, which is why we imposed it to maintain law and order,.” Kumar added”There has been the case of one lady- it is also on record that she did not make any kind of allegations against us when we talked to her but what we have come to know is that in a 164 before a magistrate she has made one statement. We have added it and will bring all the perpetrator to the book whosoever it is,” Kumar said.

Kumar told media persons, “In the case of land grabbing which seems to be the main factor, from tomorrow there will be camps, and teams from the land department will be visiting to register and accept complaints.”

Meanwhile, Officials of West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) on Saturday visited the home of a woman in Sandeshkhali who has claimed that she and her child were assaulted last week by “miscreants in the presence of police”.The six-member team recorded the woman’s statement and arranged for two security officers to be deployed at her village home for protection. The woman has claimed that miscreants broke open her door one night last week. “I was assaulted by the miscreants in the presence of police in the middle of the night, and my child fell on the floor during the scuffle,” the woman told the WBCPCR team, adding that her husband fled the scene out of fear.

She said she was able to identify two policemen of Sandeshkhali police station among the attackers.

The WBCPCR has sought an action-taken report from the police and sought the district magistrate’s intervention in the matter.

The team then visited Sandeshkhali police station and also arranged a medical checkup for the child.

The woman has alleged that her family was attacked as they are BJP supporters. “My husband has fled the house and I could not get out after the incident to file a complaint and get my child treated,” she claimed.

Tulika Das, chairperson of WBCPCR, said, “We have sent a letter to the Superintendent of Police. A team of CMOH will do a medical checkup of the child. As she is staying alone now, we will provide food and safety. When asked, she told me about the need.”

The local villagers said the miscreants were dressed as policemen but none wore shoes.

WBCPCR member Sudeshna Ray said, “We are looking into the matter. Our main focus is to provide safety and security of the child and mother. We are doing that and we will definitely take the necessary action. We will mention the two police officers identified by the woman. However, she could not identify others.

  • Manipur: Kuki-Zo groups demand release of arrested tribals within 48 hours

    By Express News Service

GUWAHATI: Kuki-Zo organisations in strife-torn Manipur registered a protest on Monday against the arrest of five tribals by central agencies and demanded their release within 48 hours.

Normal life came to a grinding halt in the Kuki-majority hill district of Churachandpur during an indefinite shutdown which was called by some tribal organisations. All shops and business establishments remained shut while vehicles were off the road.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested four tribals, including two women, from Henglep in Churachandpur on Monday by intercepting a Bolero. The arrests were made in connection with the abduction and killing of two Meitei students.

Two minor girls – daughters of one of the arrested women and travelling in the vehicle – were also taken into custody. After the six persons were flown out of Manipur to Guwahati in Assam by the evening, the two children were handed over to the District Child Protection Officer, Kamrup Metro district in Guwahati for their care.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had also arrested another tribal in a case related to a transnational conspiracy by insurgent groups based in Myanmar and Bangladesh to wage a war against India by exploiting the unrest in Manipur.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) condemned the “selective haste” of the central agencies in arresting the persons.

“If the CBI can act with such swiftness, why has it not arrested anyone in more heinous cases, like the rape and murder of two tribal girls in Imphal, burning of a 7-year-old tribal boy along with his mother and aunt, torture and beheading of a tribal youth, and so many other acts of atrocities against tribals?” the ITLF asked.

The CoTU condemned the CBI and the NIA for their alleged attempt to bring “one-sided” justice. The tribal organisation said it was “compelled to impose an emergency shutdown” on National Highway 37 – the lifeline of Manipur – till the authorities expedite the safe release of one of the “abducted” persons “Satthang Kipgen”.

Further, the organisation served an “ultimatum” on the home ministry to direct the central agencies to release the arrested persons within 48 hours, initiate a probe against “Meitei criminals” and convict them for “natural justice”.

  • An arrest has been made in Tupac Shakur’s killing. Here’s what we know about the case and the rapper

    By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES:  An arrest has been made in Tupac Shakur’s killing, the latest twist in one of the biggest unsolved cases in hip-hop history.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested on suspicion of murder early Friday morning and has been indicted on a murder charge in Las Vegas.

The case returned to the spotlight in July when Nevada authorities served a search warrant in connection with the rap star’s shooting death.

Here’s what to know about one of the most infamous fatal shootings in hip-hop history:

WHAT’S NEW IN THE INVESTIGATION?Authorities on Friday arrested Davis, who’s name has long been linked with Shakur’s death. He is the relative of a man who emerged as a suspect shortly after the rapper’s killing.

Shakur was gunned down while riding in a car on the Las Vegas strip on Sept. 7, 1996.

In July, authorities executed a warrant in the nearby city of Henderson at Davis’ house. He’s the uncle of Orlando Anderson, one of Shakur’s known rivals who authorities long suspected shot the rapper. Anderson denied involvement in Shakur’s killing at the time and died two years later in an unrelated gang shooting in Compton, California.

Details from the warrant obtained by The Associated Press show detectives collected multiple computers, a cellular telephone, “documentary documents,” a Vibe magazine that featured Shakur, several .40-caliber bullets, two “tubs containing photographs” and a copy of Davis’ 2019 memoir, ”Compton Street Legend.”

WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT SHAKUR WAS SHOT?The 25-year-old rapper was traveling in a black BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight in a convoy of about 10 cars, apparently headed to a nightclub, after watching Mike Tyson knock out Bruce Seldon in a championship fight at the MGM Grand.

After the bout, Shakur, Knight and associates were involved in a fight at the hotel.

While driving down the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac with four men inside pulled alongside the BMW while it was stopped at a red light. One person opened fire, riddling the passenger side of Knight’s car with bullets, police said. Sitting in the passenger seat, Shakur was shot four times, at least twice in the chest. Knight was grazed by a bullet fragment or shrapnel from the car.

Shakur was rushed to a hospital, where he died six days later.

WHAT IS THE RAPPER’S LEGACY?Shakur is one of the most prolific figures in hip-hop, also known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli. His professional music career only lasted five years, but he sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including the diamond-certified album “All Eyez on Me,” which was packed with hits including “California Love (Remix),” “I Ain’t Mad at Cha” and “How Do U Want It.”

Shakur had five No. 1 albums including “Me Against the World” in 1995 and “All Eyez on Me” in 1996, along with three posthumous releases: 1996’s “The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory,” 2001’s “Until the End of Time” and 2004’s “Loyal to the Game.”

The six-time Grammy-nominated artist was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Snoop Dogg in 2017.

As a rising actor, Shakur starred in several popular films such as John Singleton’s “Poetic Justice” with Janet Jackson and Ernest Dickerson’s “Juice.” He also played major roles in “Gang Related” and “Above the Rim.”

In April, a five-part FX docuseries called “ Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur” delved into the past of the rapper’s mother, Afeni Shakur, as a female leader in the Black Panther Party, while exploring Tupac’s journey as a political visionary and becoming one of the greatest rap artists of all time.

Earlier this year, Shakur received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“He defied the distinction between art and activism,” said radio personality Big Boy, who emceed the ceremony.

Shakur has been remembered with museum exhibits, including “Tupac Shakur. Wake Me When I’m Free” in 2021 and “All Eyez on Me” at the Grammy Museum in 2015. Oakland officials have said a stretch of an Oakland street will be renamed after him.

WHAT ABOUT HIS BIGGEST RIVALRY?Shakur’s death came amid his feud with rap rival the Notorious B.I.G., who was fatally shot six months later. At the time, both rappers were in the middle of the infamous East Coast-West Coast rivalry, which primarily defined the hip-hop scene during the mid-1990s.

The feud was ignited after Shakur was seriously wounded in another shooting during a robbery in the lobby of a midtown Manhattan hotel in 1994. He was shot several times and lost $40,000.

Shakur openly accused B.I.G. and Sean “Diddy” Combs of having prior knowledge of the shooting, which both vehemently denied. The shooting sparked enough of a feud that created a serious divide within the hip-hop community and fans.

The New York-born Shakur represented the West Coast after he signed with the Los Angeles-based Death Row Records. He often traded verbal jabs with New York-natives B.I.G. and Combs, who hailed from the East Coast while representing New York City-based Bad Boy Records.

Diss tracks were delivered to drive home their ferocious points across. Shakur released the aggressive single “Hit ’Em Up,” which took aim at B.I.G., who on the other hand returned with “Who Shot Ya?,” a record that was received as a taunt. However, B.I.G. claimed the song was not directed toward Shakur.

MORE ON SHAKUR’S LIFE AND CAREERShakur was born June 16, 1971, in New York City. He later moved to Baltimore and attended the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he began writing raps. He eventually made his way to Marin City, California, near San Francisco, and continued to write and record.

As a member of the Grammy-nominated group Digital Underground, Shakur appeared on the 1991 track “Same Song″ from ”This Is an EP Release″ and on the album “Sons of the P.″

That same year, Shakur achieved individual recognition with the album “2Pacalypse Now,″ which spawned the successful singles “Trapped” and “Brenda’s Got a Baby.”

The album, with references to police officers being killed, drew notoriety when a lawyer claimed a man accused of killing a Texas trooper had been riled up by the record. Then-Vice President Dan Quayle targeted “2Pacalypse Now″ in his 1992 battle with Hollywood over traditional values.

In 1993, Shakur followed up with a sophomore album, which produced songs ”I Get Around,” “Keep Ya Head Up″ and “Papa’z Song,″ and he was nominated for an American Music Award as best new rap hip-hop artist.

The following year he appeared with hip-hop group Thug Life on the “Above The Rim″ soundtrack and on the group’s album “Volume 1.″ In a photo on the album liner, he framed his face between his two extended middle fingers.

He was convicted of sexually abusing a fan in 1994 and served several months in a New York prison .

While incarcerated, Shakur indicated he was rethinking his lifestyle. He had support from Black leaders including the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton, who counseled him while he was locked up.

“Thug Life to me is dead. If it’s real, let somebody else represent it, because I’m tired of it,″ Shakur told Vibe magazine. ”I represented it too much. I was Thug Life.″

Shakur was up-front about his troubled life in the 1995 release “Me Against The World,″ a multimillion-selling album that contained the ominously titled tracks ”If I Die 2Nite″ and “Death Around The Corner″

“It ain’t easy being me. … Will I see the penitentiary, or will I stay free?″ Shakur rapped on the album, which produced the Grammy-nominated “Dear Mama″ and standout singles “So Many Tears″ and ”Temptations.″

The Las Vegas shooting occurred as Shakur’s fourth solo album, “All Eyez on Me,″ remained on the charts, with some 5 million copies sold.

  • Bribery case: Amruta Fadnavis’ designer ‘friend’ arrested; opposition cries foul

    Express News Service

The opposition demanded an impartial probe into Amruta Fadnavis’ alleged links to a Mumbai designer Anishkha, even as the latter was arrested by the police Thursday evening. Anishkha, daughter of an absconding bookie, Anil Jaisinghani, was arrested for allegedly offering Rs 1 crore to the deputy chief minister’s wife for saving her father who has been absconding for several years.

The arrest followed a police complaint lodged by Amruta Fadnavis.

The opposition cornered Devendra Fadnavis after apparently audio and video clips relating to the conversations between Amruta and Anishkha came into the limelight.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator and Opposition Leader Ajit Pawar demanded the facts behind the police complaint lodged by Amruta against the designer.

The leaders including Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) targetted the deputy chief minister alleging Amruta’s ties with Anishkha. They pointed out that Amruta has been promoting Anishkha’s designer products while the latter used to frequent the deputy chief minister’s house.

However, Amruta, in her police complaint reportedly alleged that Anishkha requested her to wear products designed by her at public events and that this would help promote her clothes, jewellery, and footwear. She felt sympathetic toward her and agreed to help her.

Devendra Fadnavis refuted the allegations. However, he admitted that his wife was approached by Anishkha and she even blackmailed his wife.

Anil Jaisinghani has been absconding for the last about eight years. He faces several cases.

Anishka, according to Devendra Fadnavis, used to meet Amruta way back in 2015-16. However, she later disappeared. In 2021, she again met his wife claiming that she is a successful designer. She even got a book written by her published by Amruta after gaining access to their house and sought her help to promote her designer products, the deputy chief minister claimed.

He reportedly issued a statement in the legislative assembly that it was a ‘political conspiracy to trap his family members’ and ‘ruin his political career.’

  • Congress divided over former Madhya Pradesh minister’s ‘kill Modi’ remark; Pateriya sent to jail

    Express News Service

BHOPAL: The opposition Congress seems divided on the controversy generated by its senior leader and ex-Madhya Pradesh minister Raja Pateriya’s “be prepared to murder Modi” statement.

The state wing of the party headed by ex-CM Kamal Nath has not only distanced itself from Pateriya’s statement but also issued a show cause notice to him seeking a reply within three days on why he shouldn’t be expelled from the party over his highly objectionable statement.

However, the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Dr Govind Singh defended Pateriya on Tuesday.

“By murder, he (Pateriya) meant defeating Modi in elections. He is a leader who is committed to non-violence, forget about violence by humans, he is even opposed to the violence meted out to animals. He shouldn’t have been arrested in the matter,” Govind Singh maintained.

Both Pateriya and Govind Singh are known to be Digvijaya Singh loyalists.

Hitting out at Govind Singh’s defence of Pateriya, the state home minister Narottam Mishra said, “by defending Pateriya’s statement, the opposition leader has defended a criminal. What Govind Singh spoke was what he has been asked to by the Italian Congress of the Nehru-Gandhi family from Delhi.”

Earlier, on Monday, the MP Congress had distanced itself from Pateriya’s statements, saying that it had to do nothing with such statements that promote political violence. The state party chief Kamal Nath, while condemning Pateriya’s statement, had said that “I pray for PM Modi’s long life, me and every other true Congress worker is totally committed to the ideology of non-violence.”

Meanwhile, Tuesday early morning, the Panna district police arrested Pateriya from his residence in Hatta town of adjoining Damoh district at around 5.30 am. He was subsequently produced before the competent court in Panna district, from where he was sent to 14 days of judicial custody by the court.

A massive row had erupted in MP on Monday, over a viral video in which Pateriya was seen telling party workers to “be prepared to murder Modi (PM Modi) in the sense of defeating him in polls to save the Constitution.”

In the 30 seconds video, the ex-minister was seen addressing party workers, “Modi (PM Narendra Modi) will finish elections, Modi will create divisions on the basis of religion, caste and language and the future life of Dalits, tribes and minorities is in danger. If Constitution is to be saved then be ready to murder Modi, in the sense by defeating him.”

An FIR was lodged against Raja Pateriya at Pawai police station of Panna district on Monday based on a complaint lodged by a PWD sub-engineer. Pateriya was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 504 (Insult intended to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).

In the complaint, the sub-engineer Sanjay Khare had alleged that Pateriya had trespassed into the PWD Guest House on Sunday on the pretext of a short stay and held a meeting of Congress workers, where he talked about “murdering Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

In the video clip going viral on social media, Kumar can be seen saying that if a man is not in a good mood, he can chop a woman into 35 pieces.

“Had I been in his (Aaftab’s) place, I would have chopped the person for arguing with me into more pieces, maybe 36. Only one person cannot make mistake. It is always the fault of both,” Kumar can be heard as saying in the video clip.

When the journalist asks from where he has been trained in such thoughts, the man can be heard saying, “What training, just take a knife and start cutting piece by piece.”

According to Bulandshahr SSP Shlok Kumar, two days back, a video of the youth claiming himself to be Rashid Khan, was found making objectionable comments. A case was filed against him at Sikandrabad police station. The SSP added that on Friday, when the police took the person in custody and questioned him, he identified himself as Vikas Kumar.

“In the preliminary inquiry, the police have found the accused to be of criminal background with five cases — two in Bulandshahr and three in Gautam Budh Nagar—lodged against him.

The cases filed against him are of theft and those under Arms Act,” said the SSP. According to Sikandrabad police station SHO Akhilesh Tripathi, the case was lodged against the youth on the basis of a complaint filed by Ravindra Sharma, who claims to be a member of the Hindu Jagran Manch. The FIR was lodged on Friday under IPC Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).
