Bhopal is buzzing with the news of a high-powered committee’s formation by the Madhya Pradesh administration to assess the rollout of the Uniform Civil Code. This bold step, formalized through an order from the Law and Legislative Affairs Department, seeks to bridge the gaps in personal laws that differ across religious and community lines.
Today, practices around matrimony, succession, adoption, and alimony vary widely, often creating hurdles in uniform justice delivery. The committee’s primary task is to analyze these variations and propose a unified code promoting equality for every resident.
At the helm is Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Prakash Desai, whose extensive Supreme Court experience lends credibility to the effort. The team also features ex-IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, lawyer Anoop Nair, educator Gopal Sharma, and activist Budhpal Singh, with Ajay Katesariya serving as secretary.
Drawing lessons from UCC implementations in Uttarakhand and Gujarat, the group will tailor recommendations to Madhya Pradesh’s diverse demographics. Stakeholder engagements—including town halls with citizens, faith-based groups, and specialists—will enrich the study.
Key focus areas include bolstering protections for women and minors, and tackling modern challenges like live-in partnerships. Tasked with a tight 60-day deadline, the committee must deliver a detailed report and draft legislation to guide policy.
