India’s road travel just got a major upgrade. On Friday, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the launch of the nation’s first barrier-free tolling system using Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology at Gujarat’s Choryasi Toll Plaza on NH-48 between Surat and Bharuch.
Drivers can now pay tolls on the move, thanks to advanced ANPR cameras and FASTag integration that automatically processes payments without barriers. According to the ministry, this shift will dramatically cut down on queues, save precious time for motorists, lower fuel consumption, curb vehicular pollution, and streamline operations with less manual oversight.
Gadkari described it as a game-changer for digital tolling and highway modernization, matching global best practices. He noted its benefits for ordinary citizens and commerce alike, promising faster logistics and trade facilitation.
This launch comes hot on the heels of April’s nationwide push for digital payments only at toll plazas via FASTag and UPI, achieving over 98% FASTag penetration. NHAI’s instructions to banks ensure swift VRN checks, ironing out any glitches.
As part of PM Modi’s vision for superior infrastructure, the MLFF system heralds an era of seamless, efficient highways. Expect wider implementation as India embraces this tech-forward approach to tolling, transforming long-haul journeys into smoother experiences.
