The Indian government has tapped veteran director Ashutosh Gowariker to helm the 57th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, a move that underscores his stature in the film industry. Coming from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, this decision highlights Gowariker’s decades-long association with the event.
With iconic films such as Lagaan, Swades, and Jodhaa Akbar to his credit, Gowariker has elevated Indian storytelling to international acclaim. His IFFI involvement spans from his debut participation in 1984 to chairing the international jury in 2024, making him an ideal choice for leadership.
‘I am deeply honored to direct the 57th edition of this illustrious festival,’ Gowariker shared enthusiastically. ‘From 1984 to now, my experiences here have been unforgettable. Extending the legacy started in 1952 is both a privilege and a responsibility. I look forward to partnering with the Ministry and Goa authorities.’
As Asia’s longest-running film festival since 1952, IFFI has grown into South Asia’s largest cinematic extravaganza. Supported by NFDC and Goa, it offers a dynamic lineup including world competitions, retrospectives, workshops, homages, and a bustling film market.
Scheduled for late 2026 along Goa’s picturesque shores, the upcoming edition will amplify its scope, embracing multilingual narratives, varied genres, and innovative techniques. It aims to bridge cultures, spotlight fresh talents, and reinforce IFFI’s role as a global cinema hub.
