In a stark reminder of ongoing public health struggles, Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has recorded two additional polio cases, elevating the country’s count to three for 2026 so far. The disclosures, shared via local media on Friday, underscore the fragility of eradication initiatives in this South Asian nation.

Sources within the Polio Eradication Initiative confided to leading daily Dawn that single cases were identified in Bannu and North Waziristan. Confirmation came swiftly from the National Emergency Operations Center, backed by analysis at the National Institute of Health’s WHO-approved lab.

The surveillance system’s vigilance detected these through routine environmental and clinical sampling, the official noted. This follows an initial case from Sindh province, signaling a worrisome uptick.

Globally, only Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan battle endemic poliovirus transmission. Compounding the crisis are violent disruptions to vaccination efforts. Reports from last month detail assaults on polio workers in multiple districts, including Hangu, Bannu, and Balochistan areas, claiming escorting officers’ lives and leading to kidnappings amid door-to-door campaigns.

March’s drives missed vaccinating around 233,000 children due to insecurity, refusals, and harsh weather. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bore the brunt with 184,000 children untouched, joined by 50,000 in disputed northern territories.

Parental refusals remain rampant, with Karachi alone logging 31,000 instances—over half the country’s total. Analysts blame a toxic mix of rumors, logistical failures, administrative lapses, and political apathy.

Since 2014, WHO’s stringent travel rules require proof of polio immunization for Pakistanis venturing abroad. With these developments, stakeholders demand a renewed, multifaceted push to safeguard future generations from this preventable paralysis.
