West Bengal’s Nandigram assembly seat has turned saffron again, with Suvendu Adhikari of BJP defeating TMC rival Pavitra Kar by more than 9,000 votes. Adhikari polled 127,301 votes to Kar’s 117,636, as per ECI figures announced from Kolkata.

This victory cements Nandigram’s status as Bengal politics’ hottest flashpoint. In 2021, Mamata Banerjee ditched her safe seat to contest here against Adhikari, losing by under 2,000 votes in a nail-biter that grabbed national headlines. The defeat bruised TMC’s image but propelled Adhikari as BJP’s rising star.

Historically, the seat favored CPI for decades, bagging nine wins since 1967 when it merged from North and South Nandigram. TMC rose from the ashes of the 2007 protests over forced land acquisition for a chemical hub, where 14 farmers died, fueling anti-Left anger that swept Mamata to power.

Demographically rural to the core, with 96.65% village dwellers, the area boasts high engagement—88.51% polling last time. Muslim voters form 23.6%, SCs 16.46%. Adhikari’s back-to-back success points to BJP eroding TMC’s base, amid accusations of strong-arm tactics and development promises. This result could ripple through Bengal’s assembly dynamics, boosting Modi’s party ahead of national polls.
