Sri Lanka’s cricket governance enters a new era as Arun Vikramaratne, a prominent ex-parliamentarian and financier, takes the helm of the SLC interim committee. The appointment follows the dramatic mass resignation of Shammi Silva and his executive team, a development that has rocked the sport’s establishment in Colombo.
Announced by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, the committee features legendary figures Roshan Mahanama and Kumar Sangakkara, alongside Sidath Wettimuny, Thushara Raddella, Avanti Colombage, Prakesh Shaifta, and Upendra Kumaraperuma. Tasked with managing day-to-day operations, they aim to address deep-rooted issues plaguing the board.
The resignations stem from a perfect storm: accusations of financial mismanagement, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and subpar team results. Silva, who assumed presidency in 2019 and held ACC presidency in 2025, cited these pressures in his exit. His multiple unopposed re-elections couldn’t shield him from fallout over events like the 2026 T20 World Cup flop and prior ICC sanctions.
Back in 2023, Silva was briefly removed post-ODI World Cup debacle, resulting in suspension and forfeited hosting duties. Reinstated in 2025, his departure now paves the way for reforms. Observers see Vikramaratne’s leadership, backed by icons like Sangakkara, as a beacon for revival, potentially mending ties with global bodies and revitalizing domestic cricket.
