A decade after the last major conclave, India and Africa are poised for renewed engagement. South African High Commissioner Anil Sooklal describes the forthcoming India-Africa Forum Summit as indispensable for forging ahead in mutual interests.

Speaking candidly, Sooklal portrayed the event as a blueprint-setter, building on historical ties and previous forums. ‘We’re excited; it’s been too long,’ he noted, attributing delays to factors like the pandemic.

Both regions have evolved dramatically. India’s meteoric economic rise contrasts with Africa’s burgeoning potential, united by common aspirations for development and prosperity.

The agenda promises depth: enhancing multilateral systems, from UN reforms to WTO adjustments, alongside confronting terrorism. Development initiatives in education and skills remain central, with India’s scholarships transforming African lives.

‘India’s role in skilling our youth is crucial,’ Sooklal emphasized, linking it to harnessing Africa’s demographic dividend.

In health, India’s global stature in pharma offers lifelines to Africa’s under-resourced systems, proven during COVID aid efforts. Agriculture modernization, drawing from India’s tech innovations like DPI, could revolutionize food production on Africa’s vast lands.

Sooklal stressed industrialization as Africa’s development key, where India’s partnership in minerals—especially tech-critical ones—holds promise. Infrastructure collaboration, spanning roads, rails, and digital, will further cement bonds.

Optimism abounds for the 2026 summit in New Delhi, co-hosted with the African Union Commission. South Africa’s robust participation will amplify bilateral gains, signaling a vibrant new chapter in India-Africa relations.
