  • Actor Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter movies, dies aged 82

    LONDON: British-Irish actor Michael Gambon, best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight “Harry Potter” films, has died in hospital aged 82, his family announced Thursday.

    Gambon won four television BAFTAs and an Olivier award during a decades-spanning acting career across television, film, radio and theatre, which was capped by his beloved role as the headmaster of the wizarding school Hogwarts in the Potter series.

    “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” a statement issued on behalf of his family said.

    “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”

    Gambon, born in Ireland, began his illustrious acting career in theatre, making his first appearance on stage in a production of “Othello” at the Gates Theatre in the Irish capital Dublin in 1962.

    He became well known in Britain for playing a French detective in the ITV series “Maigret”, and for his 1986 role as Philip Marlow in screenwriter Dennis Potter’s “The Singing Detective”.

    He put in a memorable performance in the BBC’s 2015 adaptation of JK Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy”, while his theatre credentials include appearances in Alan Ayckbourn’s “The Norman Conquests”, “The Life Of Galileo” and Nicholas Hytner’s National Theatre productions of “Henry IV”.

    But he won global acclaim for his performances as Dumbledore in the wildly popular “Harry Potter” films, beginning with 1997’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”.

    Gambon was knighted for his contribution to the entertainment industry in 1998.

    Tributes began to pour in following news of his death.

    “I’m so sad to hear that Michael Gambon has died,” former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson said on social media, recalling that the actor was such a “tremendous guest” that he had a corner named after him on the BBC show’s race track.

    “He was hugely amusing, and such a tremendous guest, we even named a corner after him.”

  • Rajasthan: Three people go missing after being swept away in Parvati river

    KOTA: Three people went missing after being swept away in the Parvati river near Kishanpura village in Rajasthan’s Kota district, police said on Sunday.

    The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the three people were taking a bath in the river’s overflowing water and catching fish, they said.

    Three persons — identified as Rahul Gujarati (23), Banti Jatav (42) and Babulal (45) — all residents of Gandhi Colony under the Baran Sadar police station area were swept away in deep water in the Parvati river on Saturday afternoon while they were bathing and catching fish, said SHO Ramvilas.

    The river’s water level reportedly suddenly began rising and the three persons, along with two others named Kishan and Neelu, were swept away by the strong current of the water, he added.

    The SHO said Kishan and Neelu somehow managed to reach the shore while the three others went missing.

    The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and civil defence teams began the search operation soon after the incident but the three missing have not yet been traced, he added.

  • Drug dealer sentenced to 10 years in prison in overdose death of  actor Michael K Williams

    NEW YORK: A New York City drug dealer was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for providing The Wire actor Michael K Williams with fentanyl-laced heroin, causing his death.

    Irvin Cartagena, 40, of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, was sentenced by US District Judge Ronnie Abrams.

    Cartagena had pleaded guilty in April to conspiring to distribute drugs.

    Williams overdosed in his Brooklyn penthouse apartment in September 2021. He died hours after authorities said he bought the heroin from Cartagena on a sidewalk in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood in a deal recorded by a security camera.

    Williams famously portrayed Omar Little, the rogue robber of drug dealers, in HBO’s The Wire, which ran from 2002 to 2008.

    In addition to his work on the critically acclaimed drama, Williams also starred in films and other TV series such as Boardwalk Empire.

  • Maha: Fire destroys studio where actor Tunisha Sharma was found dead

    PALGHAR:  A fire destroyed a film studio, which was recently in the news following the death of actor Tunisha Sharma, in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, an official said on Saturday.

    According to fire brigade officials, the fire started at Bhajanlal Studios at Kaman in Vasai, on the outskirts of Mumbai, around Friday midnight.

    The fire was put out by around 4 am on Saturday, said a fire brigade official of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he said.

    It was at Bhajanlal Studios where actor Tunisha Sharma (21) was found hanging in a washroom on the set of the TV show ‘Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul’ on December 24, 2022.

    Her co-star and former boyfriend Sheezan Khan (28) was arrested the next day on the charge of abetment. He walked out of jail on March 5 after securing bail. Khan is now in South Africa to take part in a popular reality show. A court has allowed him to travel abroad for work.

  • Former law minister Shanti Bhushan dies at 97

    NEW DELHI: Former Union law minister and eminent jurist Shanti Bhushan died Tuesday at his home in Delhi following a brief illness, a source close to his family said. He was 97.

    Bhushan, who was also a senior advocate, served as the law minister from 1977 to 1979 in the Morarji Desai cabinet.

    Bhushan, whose sons Jayant and Prashant Bhushan are leading lawyers, was active in the legal profession till recently and had argued on a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking a court-monitored probe into the Rafale fighter jets deal.

    Shanti Bhushan appeared in several cases of public importance.

    He represented petitioner Raj Narain in the Allahabad High Court in a famous case in which the election of then prime minister Indira Gandhi was annulled for committing electoral malpractices.

    He was quite vocal on the issue of corruption which led him to his brief association with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

    Law Minister Kiren Rijiju condoled the demise of Shanti Bhushan, saying he was deeply pained by the news of the passing away of the eminent jurist.

    “Deeply pained to hear the news that former Union Law and Justice Minister Shanti Bhushan ji is no more.

    My deepest condolences to the family members on his passing away. My prayers for the departed soul. Om Shanti,” Rijiju wrote on Twitter.

  • Former JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav dies at 75

    NEW DELHI: Veteran politician and former JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav died on Thursday at a private hospital in Gurugram, family sources said. He was 75.

    He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

    A statement from the Fortis Memorial Research Institute said Yadav was brought to the emergency ward in an unconscious and unresponsive state.

    “On examination, he did not have any pulse or recordable blood pressure. He underwent CPR as per ACLS protocols. Despite best efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 10. 19 pm,” the statement said.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over Yadav’s demise.

    “Pained by the passing away of Shri Sharad Yadav Ji. In his long years in public life, he distinguished himself as MP and Minister. He was greatly inspired by Dr. Lohia’s ideals. I will always cherish our interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” he tweeted.

    Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also expressed grief on Yadav’s demise.

    “I am saddened by the news of the untimely demise of Mandal Messiah. A great socialist leader and my guardian respected Sharad Yadav ji. I am speechless,” he tweeted in Hindi.

    The RJD leader said he had a conversation with his family members.

    “In this hour of grief, the entire Samajwadi fraternity is with his family members,” he said.

    UNNAO: Four people were killed Monday morning when their bus rammed into a truck in the midst of a dense fog cover in Unnao on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, police said.

    Superintendent of Police Shashi Shekhar Singh said the bus was going from Rajkot in Gujarat to Nepal. The accident occurred in Auras area of Unnao. 

    A blinding fog cover engulfed a large part of the state this morning.

    With visibility reduced considerably due to the fog, the bus hit the truck from behind on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway around 5.30 am, Singh said.

    He added three male passengers of the bus died on the spot, while one woman succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital. Efforts are on to identify the deceased persons.

    According to Singh, there were 60 passengers on the bus. Six injured passengers have been hospitalised.

    The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, police said.

  • Cyrus Mistry death: Multiple challans were issued against Anahita Pandole for over-speeding since 2020

    MUMBAI: Gynaecologist Dr Anahita Pandole, who was booked on the charge of rash driving that resulted into the death of industrialist Cyrus Mistry, has a history of traffic rules violation and was issued challans for over-speeding on several occasions since 2020, a police official said on Thursday.

    The police in Palghar district of Maharashtra, who are investigating the Mistry car accident case, have found this during their investigation.

    Former Tata Sons chairman Mistry (54) and his friend Jehangir Pandole were killed after the Mercedes-Benz car hit the railing of the Surya river bridge in Palghar district on September 4 this year.

    Dr Anahita, who was at the wheel, and her husband Darius suffered serious injuries in the accident. All of them were returning to Mumbai from Ahmedabad.

    The police official said that during the probe, it was found that the car was involved in violation of various traffic-related norms in the past.

    “There were at least seven instances in which Dr Anahita was found behind the wheel and over-speeding, which was captured on speed cameras,” Palghar Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil said.

    These instances were from 2020 till the day of the accident in September 2022, he said, adding the e-challans against her will now be made part of the charge-sheet, he said.

    “Those challans were issued for over-speeding involving the same car that was involved in the Palghar accident,” he said.

    The car was registered in the name of J M Financials and was used by Anahita Pandole, the official said.

    Patil said the Palghar Police would submit the charge-sheet in the case by the end of this week before the local court, he said.

    “Police have not recorded Dr Anahita’s statement in connection with the accident so far,” he said.

    The Palghar Police had registered a case of rash driving against Dr Anahita in November.

    A case under Indian Penal Code sections 304 (A) (causing death by rash and negligent act), 279 (rash driving on a public road) and 337 (causing death by act endangering life and personal safety of others) besides the Motor Vehicles Act was registered at Kasa police station.

    HNAHTHIAL: A total of eight bodies have been recovered so far from the site at Maudarh village in Mizoram’s Hnahthial district after a stone quarry collapsed on Monday afternoon.

    The incident took place at around 2:40 pm in the Maudarh area in the Hnahthial district.

    Twelve more workers are still feared trapped. Out of 12 workers, four are ABCI Infrastructure Pvt Ltd employees and eight are contractor employees.

    According to the district administration, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team comprising two officers and 13 staff reached the spot on Tuesday morning. The search operation is on.

    Saizikpuii, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Hnahthial district told ANI that the dead bodies would be carried for post-mortem examination after the identification of the bodies is done.
