India’s promising Under-18 ice hockey squad has arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, ahead of the IIHF Asia Cup from April 27 to May 3. Featuring six competitive teams, the event promises high-stakes action on ice.

Gurttej Singh Bhatti takes the helm as captain, backed by vice-captains Devansh Sharma and Iftikhar Hussain. Chandigarh and Ladakh dominate the lineup, but players from various regions highlight the sport’s nationwide expansion.

This tournament represents more than matches—it’s a proving ground for India’s junior talents amid the sport’s renaissance. The women’s team made history with a bronze at the 2025 IIHF Women’s Asia Cup in Al Ain, India’s inaugural international podium finish.

Earlier, the men’s team earned silver in the 2017 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia Division I. Key developments like the Himadri Ice Rink’s revival and the India Ice Hockey League debut have revitalized the domestic scene.

‘2024 was a breakthrough year,’ said IHAI Secretary General Harjinder Singh. ‘Women’s bronze in Asia Cup, men’s participation in Harbin Asian Winter Games, Himadri’s reopening, and our new league—the sport is thriving.’

Singh continued, ‘This U-18 campaign excites us. Diverse state representation shows depth, and the Asia Cup will provide invaluable international experience for these boys.’

In a boost for the team, SS Group, a leading Delhi-NCR developer, has teamed up with IHAI. CEO Ashok Singh Jaunpuria noted, ‘This collaboration underscores the rising momentum and potential of India’s young ice hockey prospects as they hit the ice in Bishkek.’
