Picture a young boy in Kerala hawking soda to make ends meet, dreaming of glory on the pitch. That boy was I.M. Vijayan, born Inivalappl Mani Vijayan on April 25, 1969, in Thrissur. Today, he’s celebrated as one of India’s greatest footballers, a former national captain, and the sport’s top earner.

Discovered by DGP M.K. Joseph, Vijayan joined Kerala Police at 17, launching a club career with giants like Mohun Bagan, JCT Mills Phagwara, FC Cochin, and East Bengal. On the international stage, his 1992 debut led to 72 caps and 29 goals, captaining India from 2000-2004 alongside Bhaichung Bhutia in a duo that became legendary.

Vijayan’s feats are etched in history: a blistering 12-second goal against Bhutan in 1999 SAFF Cup, the quickest ever internationally, and four goals to claim top scorer at 2003 Afro-Asian Games. Dubbed ‘Blackbuck’ for his speed, he retired from internationals post-2003, leaving an indelible mark as Indian club football’s highest-paid star.

Awards followed: Arjuna in 2003, Padma Shri in 2025. Vijayan didn’t just play; he elevated Indian football, inspiring generations with his rise from rags to riches.
