In a formality that underscored the Bharatiya Janata Party’s unchallenged dominance, Praveen Vahi was elected the new Mayor of Delhi’s Municipal Corporation (MCD) on April 29. The BJP candidate swept the election with 156 out of 165 votes, marking a clean sweep against minimal opposition.

Congress’s Haji Zarif managed only nine votes in the contest, which lacked participation from AAP. BJP’s numerical superiority—bolstered by 141-143 votes from its 123 councillors post-2022 elections—made the result a foregone conclusion. The 273-member voter base included 249 councillors alongside MPs and nominated MLAs, needing 137 votes for a win.

Vahi, a seasoned politician from Rohini E ward with three consecutive council terms, holds the key Leader of the House position. Selected late in the nomination process, he brings RSS roots and a robust grassroots presence. Party brass and even the Chief Minister endorsed his suitability, eyeing better Centre-MCD synergy.

‘We will work with utmost dedication to make Delhi cleaner and more beautiful,’ Vahi declared while filing papers. His one-year tenure, amid chatter over his educational background and property details, positions him to drive MCD’s ambitious cleanup and infrastructure agendas.

BJP’s strategic consolidation in municipal politics signals a new era for Delhi’s governance. With no real rivals, Vahi’s leadership could accelerate long-pending projects, from waste management to road repairs, benefiting millions of residents.
