A somber atmosphere has enveloped Sanichar Toli in Gumla following the tragic death of two sisters by drowning on Friday. The incident happened at a village pond within the jurisdiction of the Basia police station. The victims, identified as 18-year-old cousins Kajal and Deepika, were part of a group of five friends who had gone to the pond to bathe. The outing turned fatal when the girls were caught off guard by the depth of the water.
Reports indicate that the sequence of events was triggered when one of the girls began to sink in the deep water. In a heroic but tragic effort to save her sister, the other cousin plunged deeper into the pond. The remaining three girls also tried to assist but were quickly overwhelmed by the water’s depth. Villagers who were nearby heard the screams and acted swiftly, jumping into the pond to initiate a rescue. While they were successful in saving three girls, Kajal and Deepika could not be revived.
Gumla Superintendent of Police, Harish Bin Jama, confirmed the incident, stating that the girls had moved into a dangerously deep area of the pond. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter and have completed the initial formalities. The bodies were transported to the district hospital for autopsy. The local administration has expressed its condolences to the grieving families who are currently in a state of shock and profound grief.
