Raigarh: Villagers Turn Poachers, Kill Deer Saved from Dog Attack

Humanity and wildlife conservation efforts faced a grim setback in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district after five men were jailed for butchering a spotted deer they had recently ‘rescued’. The animal, driven by thirst and hunger, had strayed into Delari village from the adjacent forest. Exposed and vulnerable, it was immediately targeted by local dogs. Witnesses initially saw the villagers chasing the dogs away, leading to the belief that the animal was safe in human hands. However, that safety was short-lived as the rescuers eventually turned into predators.

The Forest Department’s intelligence network played a crucial role in uncovering the crime. Reports surfaced that venison was being cooked and consumed in the village, leading to an immediate crackdown. Under the direction of SDO Tanmay Kaushik, the department conducted raids and found incriminating evidence, including portions of the deer’s meat. The suspects admitted to the crime during interrogation, revealing that they had decided to kill the deer for a feast rather than reporting the incident to the forest range office.

Samples of the seized meat have been dispatched to a forensic laboratory to confirm the species and strengthen the legal case against the accused. The five men—Atmaram, Mayaram, Haricharan, Tarun, and Motilal—now face severe legal consequences under the Wildlife Protection Act. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the forest department in protecting endangered species from local interference and the need for greater awareness regarding animal rights.
