In a major push towards economic self-reliance, the Bihar Transport Department has overhauled its permit system to encourage commercial bike services. Aspiring entrepreneurs can now obtain a five-year commercial permit for motorcycles for just 1,150 rupees. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify public transport options and provide affordable commuting solutions. The permit grants access to operate across 35 districts, linking rural villages to district headquarters. However, to prevent traffic congestion, these services are restricted within the municipal limits of major cities like Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur, focusing instead on underserved peripheral areas.

The revised fee structure also extends to other commercial vehicles. Petrol and diesel-run auto-rickshaws can obtain permits for 1,650 rupees, while CNG-powered autos and motor cabs enjoy a lower rate of 1,150 rupees, echoing the state’s push for eco-friendly transport. Larger vehicles like maxi cabs and mini-buses have also seen fee adjustments ranging from 3,150 to 9,000 rupees depending on the operational range. By lowering the financial barrier to entry, the state government hopes to create a robust network of transport providers that can navigate the narrow streets of Bihar’s growing towns where traditional buses cannot reach.
