India’s power grid faced its toughest test yet on Saturday, clocking a staggering peak demand of 256.11 GW amid a brutal heatwave gripping the nation. According to Power Ministry figures, this eclipsed the previous day’s high of 252.07 GW, with cooling devices in overdrive across homes and offices.

Thankfully, ample generation ensured no disruptions, as officials emphasized the system’s robustness. The trend marks a sharp rebound from early April’s unseasonal rains that subdued demand. Recent weeks, however, have seen a meteoric rise tied to climbing mercury levels.

Experts anticipate even steeper climbs, with summer projections hitting 270 GW. IMD data underscores the crisis: temperatures 5°C above average in key areas, paving the way for widespread heatwaves.

From April through June 2026, northern India, Gangetic plains, central regions, and east coast face above-normal heatwave days. Highs over 45°C, plus humidity, heighten life-threatening conditions in states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and more.

Early signs are evident in Punjab, Delhi, and Kerala parts. Public health campaigns stress drinking water proactively, shunning midday exposure, and wearing airy, light-colored attire.

This episode spotlights India’s vulnerability to extreme weather, urging investments in renewable energy, smart grids, and conservation to safeguard against escalating demands in a warming world.
