Karnataka’s Tumakuru district is on high alert after H5N1 bird flu was detected in peacocks, as verified by Bhopal’s premier animal disease research institute on April 29. Dead birds discovered around four villages—Kolihalli, Bairasandra, Hullenahalli, and Timmegowdanapalya—have triggered a comprehensive response from the district administration.

Under the Deputy Commissioner’s leadership, an urgent review meeting outlined immediate preventive strategies. The core infected area spans 0-3 km, with a surrounding 3-10 km zone marked for intensive monitoring. Over the coming 10 days, medical surveillance will target flu symptoms, fevers, and breathing difficulties in 20,432 individuals across 38 villages linked to the Siddaganga Mutt health center.

Public health advisories are clear and direct: steer clear of ill or deceased birds, practice rigorous hand hygiene, cook chicken and eggs properly, isolate from coughing contacts, and consult doctors at the first sign of trouble. Officials report the outbreak is contained, with round-the-clock oversight in operation.

‘We are fully prepared and monitoring every development,’ stated district leaders, cautioning against panic and misinformation. As avian influenza poses a rare but real risk to humans, proactive vigilance is key. The team stands ready to intensify efforts to safeguard the community from any escalation.
