Jammu and Kashmir’s rail network takes a giant leap forward with the launch of direct Vande Bharat Express services connecting Jammu and Srinagar from April 30. Northern Railway’s announcement on Wednesday has generated excitement among commuters, pilgrims, and tourists alike.
The flagship event at Jammu Tawi station will feature Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Dr. Jitendra Singh, MP from Kathua-Udhampur, joined by Jammu MP Jugal Kishore. This high-profile flagging-off ceremony highlights the government’s commitment to seamless connectivity.
Officials confirmed that infrastructure is fully prepared: tracks tested, trains equipped, and security protocols robust. The service builds on existing Katra-Srinagar routes, with revised timetables to accommodate the extension to Jammu.
For decades, reliable rail links to Kashmir remained elusive due to terrain challenges. The USBRL project’s completion, celebrated by PM Modi on June 6, 2025, changed that. That day saw the inaugural run from Katra to Srinagar, opening doors to year-round rail travel.
As the Amarnath pilgrimage kicks off on July 3, this train will ease pilgrim movement, complementing road travel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. In monsoons or snow, when roads falter, rails will shine as the dependable alternative.
Upgrading from eight to possibly 20 coaches, the train promises greater capacity. Originally planned for 2026, the early rollout demonstrates efficient execution. Meanwhile, the Jammu division’s freight operations have surged, handling diverse cargo and supporting economic growth.
This development not only shortens journeys but also fosters tourism, boosts local economies, and strengthens national integration. Travelers can look forward to faster, comfortable rides between these key cities, heralding a new era of mobility in the region.
