West Bengal’s Madhyamgram assembly seat witnessed democratic fervor at its peak with 94.62% polling in the second phase, culminating in Trinamool Congress candidate Rathin Ghosh’s narrow yet decisive victory over BJP’s Anindya Banerjee by 2,399 votes.
Ghosh garnered 95,995 votes, while Banerjee secured 93,596 in this high-stakes urban-rural blend under North 24 Parganas district. The district overall saw 92.92% participation, highlighting Madhyamgram’s exceptional engagement.
Part of the vibrant Kolkata metro area and Barrackpore parliamentary seat, Madhyamgram has favored TMC since 2011. Ghosh, 68, education up to class 12, with no criminal history and Rs 57.9 lakh assets, extended his winning streak to three terms.
BJP fielded 57-year-old Anindya Banerjee, also class 12 educated, burdened by 12 criminal cases but holding Rs 3.3 crore in wealth. Congress’s 72-year-old graduate Anant Roy, clean-sheet and Rs 41.6 lakh assets, couldn’t mount a challenge.
With Muslims at 27.60% and SC voters at 12.78% of the electorate, social equations keep races unpredictable. TMC’s organizational prowess and popular schemes have held firm, countering BJP’s aggressive vote-share gains that have intensified competition.
As results pour in, Ghosh’s triumph reinforces TMC’s grip on suburban strongholds, amid BJP’s persistent push in Bengal’s polarized politics.
