In a swift move, the ICC has issued an official reprimand to Bangladesh women’s cricket captain Nigar Sultana for a Code of Conduct violation. The breach occurred in the decisive third T20 International against Sri Lanka at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

During her team’s innings, Nigar, overcome by disappointment upon her dismissal, threw her bat onto the pitch in frustration. This misconduct fell under Article 2.2 of the ICC regulations, addressing improper use of playing equipment or field apparatus.

Supriya Rani Das, the match referee, proposed the penalty, which Nigar promptly accepted. Consequently, no hearing was required, but her record now carries a demerit point—the first in two years.

The umpiring team, including on-field officials Aloys Sheridan and Sathira Jakir Jessie, along with third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Champa Chakma, reported the incident. Level 1 offenses typically attract reprimands, fines up to half the match fee, and demerit points that linger for 24 months.

Four demerit points trigger suspensions: equivalent to one Test, two ODIs, or two T20s, tailored to the player’s upcoming commitments. This underscores the ICC’s zero-tolerance approach to on-field discipline.

Sri Lanka capped off a triumphant tour with ODI and T20 series victories, leaving Bangladesh to regroup. Nigar’s lapse highlights the pressures of leadership in international cricket, where emotions must be reined in.

As the cricketing world moves forward, such incidents prompt discussions on sportsmanship. Bangladesh fans hope their captain emerges stronger, setting an example in future battles.
