BJP candidate Rupesh Gowala delivered a stunning performance in Assam’s Doomdooma constituency, trouncing Congress rival Durga Bhumij with 55,382 votes to spare. Polling 86,009 votes, Gowala’s win cements BJP’s status as the new power center in this politically charged region.

Located in Tinsukia district, Doomdooma has evolved from a Congress citadel to a battleground reflecting Assam’s broader transformations. Part of the Lakhimpur parliamentary area, it includes urban and rural segments across development blocks, participating in every assembly poll since 1951.

Congress ruled unchallenged for years, securing 13 victories, including a streak of 12 from 1952-2006. BJP’s 2006 near-miss with Dilip Moran hinted at change. By 2011, Moran broke through, defeating Congress. The seat flipped back in 2016 via Bhumij’s razor-thin win, but 2021 saw ex-Congressman Gowala switch sides and claim it for BJP.

Recent Lok Sabha results paint a clear picture of BJP’s ascent: overpowering Congress by tens of thousands since 2014. This momentum carried into the assembly race, where personal rivalries between former Congress allies added intrigue.

Demographics play a key role—mostly rural voters with high participation rates despite minimal minority presence. Registered voters now exceed 147,000, signaling growing engagement. Gowala’s landslide not only retains the seat but positions BJP strongly for future battles, potentially redefining Upper Assam’s electoral map.
