Early leads in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections paint a dominant picture for the BJP, leading on nearly two-thirds of the 293 seats amid ongoing counts. TMC faces a rout in four key districts, failing to secure even a single seat, highlighting cracks in its rural and tribal outreach.

From across the Palk Strait, Sri Lanka’s main opposition figure Sajith Premadasa congratulated PM Modi on X, stating, ‘Warm felicitations to PM Narendra Modi and BJP for their victory in West Bengal polls. It showcases people’s aspirations and democracy’s robust spirit. Here’s to India’s ongoing growth and steadiness.’

Election Commission data reveals BJP ahead on 192 seats, TMC on 92, with minor leads for AGYP (2), BGPM (1), CPI(M) (1), and AISF (1). The polls, conducted in two phases with repolling at Falta due to violence, have exposed TMC’s vulnerabilities in North and South Bengal.

Jhargram, heart of the tribal Junglemahal once ruled by Left parties and later TMC, sees BJP sweeping Nayagram, Gopiballavpur, Jhargram, and Binpur (ST). Alipurduars’ seats—Kumargram (ST), Kalchini (ST), Alipurduars, Falakata (SC), Madarihat (ST)—and Jalpaiguri’s lineup including Dhupguri (SC), Maynaguri (SC), Jalpaiguri (SC), Rajganj (SC), Dabgram-Fulbari, Mal (ST), Nagrakata (ST) are firmly in BJP’s grasp per morning trends.

This shift in former Maoist hotspots and TMC strongholds suggests a pro-incumbency wave at the national level influencing state dynamics. Premadasa’s nod adds global validation to what could be a game-changer for Bengal’s governance, promising a new era of development-focused politics.
