India marks International Workers’ Day with remarkable milestones in labour reforms. Social security coverage has skyrocketed from 19% in 2015 to more than 64% by 2025, a testament to targeted government policies.

At the forefront is the empowerment of women, whose labour participation has risen sharply from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 40% in 2025. Rural India leads this charge, with women moving beyond traditional roles into regular, income-boosting ventures.

Official statements highlight how skills development, social security, and formal integration are bringing women into the economic mainstream. The Periodic Labour Force Survey data confirms this upward trajectory, reflecting broader job expansion and labour market formalization.

Healthcare improvements are equally impressive. A new ESIC hospital in Badgam, Jammu & Kashmir, will provide services to over 50,000 labourers and families, addressing gaps in the unorganized sector where women predominate.

Provident funds, insurance, and health services are reaching more women, fueling their economic independence. The National Rural Livelihood Mission has mobilized over 10 crore women into self-help groups, fostering micro-enterprises in production and marketing.

Initiatives like Lakhpati Didi are accelerating female entrepreneurship, equipping women with credit, training, and market access to achieve annual incomes exceeding ₹1 lakh. India’s vibrant startup scene, with 2.2 lakh entities and 23.3 lakh jobs, includes over 1 lakh startups led by at least one woman director.

This Labour Day, these strides underscore a future where women’s rising participation drives sustainable development and equitable growth across the nation.
