Tensions in West Asia have triggered a brutal response from Tehran, according to a UN report. Following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran starting February 28, the country has carried out 21 hangings and arrested over 4,000 people in a sweeping security purge.

Breaking down the executions, the UN Rights Office noted nine tied to January 2026 protests that gained momentum amid the war’s early stages. Another ten were put to death for purported opposition affiliations, and two for spying. These actions signal Tehran’s aggressive stance against unrest at home.

‘Over 4,000 individuals have been detained since February 28 on national security grounds,’ the agency stated, pointing to a sharp rise in repressive measures as the Middle East conflict intensifies.

On the international front, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to berate Iran, warning, ‘Iran is failing badly. Get wise quickly. They have no clue on signing a non-nuclear deal.’ His comments come as oil prices soar due to Hormuz Strait disruptions.

Media outlets report Trump instructing partners to gear up for a prolonged naval blockade of Iranian ports, targeting the nation’s oil trade and broader economy. A Wall Street Journal piece, based on anonymous U.S. sources, confirmed plans to halt shipping lanes indefinitely.

In retaliation, Iran’s UN representative Amir Saeid Iravani sent a scathing letter to UN leadership, labeling American ship seizures as piracy. Tasnim News quoted him decrying any attempt to legitimize ‘vile offenses’ via unlawful force.

This confluence of internal crackdowns, economic sieges, and sharp rhetoric highlights the deepening divides in the region. With no end in sight to the war, Iran’s actions raise alarms about further human rights deteriorations and global economic ripples.
