Todd McClay, New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment, has showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisive leadership in propelling the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to fruition in just nine months—a historic achievement.
Speaking exclusively, McClay attributed this swift progress to the strong synergy between Modi and his counterpart Christopher Luxon. Their friendship, nurtured over various international summits, translated into actionable momentum for trade talks.
The minister fondly remembered Luxon’s landmark visit to India with the biggest business delegation in New Zealand’s history. “Meeting PM Modi at the deal’s closure was a privilege,” he shared, expressing deep admiration for Modi’s global stature.
Now that negotiations are wrapped up, the onus shifts to private sectors. McClay pledged ongoing governmental support and plans to facilitate more delegations both ways. “Businesses must embrace this FTA to unlock substantial opportunities,” he emphasized.
McClay eagerly awaits hosting PM Modi in New Zealand, extending a warm welcome and a playful cricket challenge. He noted the shared democratic heritage and the enduring cricket bond, especially with 2024 marking 70 years of sporting exchanges and India’s recent T20 final victory.
This FTA promises to supercharge exports, investments, and collaborations, benefiting economies and citizens on both sides of the Pacific.
