Panic gripped the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery in Barmer, Rajasthan, on Monday when flames erupted near the Crude Distillation Unit, forcing the postponement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration planned for April 21, 2026. The Petroleum Ministry swiftly assured the public that the fire was doused without any injuries, thanks to rapid intervention by fire brigades and on-site teams.
Located in Pachpadra, the incident site is roughly a kilometer from where dignitaries were set to gather. About 20 fire engines battled the blaze, supported by the refinery’s internal safety mechanisms. Authorities from the police control room confirmed full control over the situation after sustained efforts.
The ministry’s X post detailed ongoing probes into the fire’s origins, with promises of necessary fixes and a forthcoming new schedule. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s team, who were en route for final inspections, labeled it a small-scale event with no major disruptions.
This colossal project, costing over Rs 79,450 crore and developed collaboratively by HPCL and Rajasthan, boasts a 9 MMTPA capacity. It’s hailed as a cornerstone of India’s energy independence, featuring cutting-edge technology for refining and petrochemicals.
The refinery’s completion signals robust economic growth for the region, fostering employment and downstream industries. While the cause remains under scrutiny, the incident underscores the challenges of large-scale infrastructure amid high-stakes timelines. Excitement builds for the eventual launch, which will undoubtedly spotlight India’s strides in the global energy arena.
