In a bold step towards inclusive development, India’s government reported on Monday that the SMILE scheme has rehabilitated nearly 10,000 individuals from begging. Out of 31,055 identified across the nation, 9,935 now have a fresh start, thanks to this transformative program.

Central to the effort are 21 Garima Grih operating in 17 states, dedicated to transgender people facing homelessness due to societal rejection. These dignified shelters provide comprehensive support: accommodation, nutrition, healthcare, leisure activities, and skill-building workshops. With three more approved for August 2025, the network is growing rapidly.

Community-based organizations manage these centers, funded by the DoSJE, ensuring grassroots efficiency. The 2022-launched SMILE scheme marks a national first, focusing on holistic rehabilitation—saving lives while equipping participants with health, education, counseling, skills, and employment pathways to self-sufficiency.

Transgender community members receive premium healthcare via Ayushman Bharat TG Plus, with up to Rs 5 lakh coverage for specialized treatments like surgeries and hormone therapies. Backed by a Rs 390 crore allocation through 2026, SMILE differentiates itself by tackling interconnected challenges head-on.

Educational aid flows to transgender students through scholarships spanning Class 9 to postgraduate levels. Parallel initiatives target beggars for full reintegration, pursuing the vision of a begging-free India. Meanwhile, 18 pilot entrepreneurship programs are empowering 1,800 transgender entrepreneurs with essential training in business fundamentals.

This multifaceted campaign not only addresses immediate needs but builds long-term resilience, proving government’s commitment to the most overlooked sections of society.
