Amid heightened risks in one of the world’s most vital sea lanes, 14 Indian ships have managed to traverse the Strait of Hormuz unscathed in recent weeks, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. Yet, 14 more are currently positioned within the Persian Gulf, vulnerable to ongoing hostilities.

Speaking at the weekly media interaction in New Delhi, MEA’s Randhir Jaiswal provided the latest figures: ‘Over the last few weeks, 10 Indian ships have safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, 14 Indian ships remain in the Persian Gulf.’

This narrow passage, through which 20% of global oil flows, remains tense due to West Asian conflicts. The situation worsened with Iran’s Wednesday strike on a vessel bound for Mundra Port in India, shortly after Trump’s ceasefire announcement.

Iran’s IRGC-Navy targeted MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, claiming control. Ship trackers confirmed Epaminondas, under Liberian flag and Greek ownership, was heading from Jebel Ali to Mundra. A prior Saturday attack on two other cleared Indian ships prompted India’s firm diplomatic response.

The MEA summoned Iran’s envoy, conveying deep concern over the attacks. ‘The safety of our ships and seafarers is paramount,’ the Foreign Secretary asserted, reminding Tehran of past safe passages granted. India demanded urgent measures to resume secure transit for its vessels.

With global trade at stake, these incidents spotlight the fragility of energy routes. As 14 ships await clearance, diplomatic efforts intensify to prevent further disruptions and ensure crew welfare.
