In a somber moment for Indian sports, former Olympian Gurbaksh Singh Grewal has breathed his last at 84. Hockey India led the tributes, remembering the 1968 Olympic bronze medalist’s lifelong devotion to the game and future talents.

A key figure in India’s bronze-winning squad at the Mexico City Olympics, Gurbaksh shared the field with his brother Balbir, etching their names in history as the first Indian brothers to compete together in Olympics hockey.

Hailing from pre-partition Punjab, Gurbaksh’s journey took him to Mumbai, where he dazzled for Western Railway. Post-retirement, he remained a guiding force, coaching Mumbai clubs and administering the Mumbai Hockey Association as Honorary Secretary.

‘Indian hockey is in shock,’ stated Hockey India chief Dilip Tirkey. ‘Gurbaksh ji was more than an Olympian; he was a beacon whose influence reached every corner of the sport. His zeal for hockey and nurturing the next generation is unforgettable. Heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones from all of us at Hockey India.’

Echoing the sentiment, Secretary Bholanath Singh noted, ‘A true icon has departed. His on-field exploits and off-field efforts transformed Indian hockey forever. May his family find strength amid this loss.’

Gurbaksh’s career was a tapestry of triumphs and service. His speedy forward play lit up international arenas, while his administrative roles ensured the sport’s growth. Today, as flags fly at half-mast metaphorically across pitches, his contributions stand as a testament to enduring legacy.
