In a strategic diplomatic move, India has appointed veteran leader Dinesh Trivedi as High Commissioner to Bangladesh, leveraging his rich political legacy to bolster ties with the neighboring nation. Announced by the Ministry of External Affairs, this posting comes as both countries eye enhanced cooperation.
Trivedi’s roots trace back to a family displaced by Partition, arriving in Delhi from Karachi. Born in 1950, he graduated in commerce from Kolkata’s St. Xavier’s College and honed business skills with management training abroad. A trained pilot with stints in aviation and business, he entered politics via Congress, later aligning with Janata Dal for his 1990 Rajya Sabha entry.
Co-founding TMC with Mamata Banerjee marked a high point, followed by his 2009 Lok Sabha win from Barrackpore. His ministerial tenure included health and the railways, where a bold fare increase proposal in 2011 led to his resignation amid public outcry. Undeterred, Trivedi excelled in parliamentary duties, earning the Outstanding Parliamentarian award and leading key forums like the Indo-EU Parliamentary group.
Switching to BJP in 2021, Trivedi brings cross-party wisdom to diplomacy. Experts anticipate his tenure will focus on trade, security, and people-to-people links, addressing issues like border management and economic partnerships. This appointment underscores India’s proactive foreign policy approach.
