India took a giant leap in emergency communications on Saturday with the rollout of nationwide mobile-based disaster alert systems. Citizens were startled as ‘Extremely Serious Warning’ notifications buzzed on their phones, part of a comprehensive test of the indigenous Cell Broadcast System.
This cutting-edge technology aims to revolutionize how disaster warnings reach the masses, providing instantaneous alerts without relying on network congestion. The bilingual test message read: ‘India launches Cell Broadcast service with homegrown tech for instant citizen disaster notifications. Alert Citizen, Safe Nation. This is only a test—no action needed.’
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications’ Department of Telecommunications and NDMA, the system follows global ITU standards via CAP. Active across all states and UTs, it geo-targets regions to flood mobiles with vital SMS alerts.
Proven effective, it has dispatched 134 billion+ multilingual alerts for cyclones, floods, and storms. Now, integrating Cell Broadcast addresses limitations of SMS in high-stakes scenarios like earthquakes, tsunamis, or industrial accidents, broadcasting to every device in a zone instantly.
C-DOT’s pivotal role in crafting this Made-in-India solution underscores India’s self-reliance in telecom innovation. As climate threats intensify, this system fortifies the nation’s first line of defense: informed citizens acting swiftly to safeguard lives and property.
