In a reassuring message amid rising summer concerns, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated on Saturday that May’s potential heat spells should not cause alarm. Simple adherence to IMD forecasts and everyday safeguards will suffice.

Official data points to elevated heat risks in southern India, northeast pockets, and northwest zones, with possible heatwaves. Yet, the majority of India anticipates standard or cooler temperatures.

‘Prioritize hydration, shun midday sun, and care for the elderly and weak,’ Dr. Singh advised. He highlighted IMD’s role in delivering precise daily bulletins and risk-focused predictions to safeguard public health.

Minimum temperatures are set to exceed norms in many places, per IMD’s recent outlooks. Proactive measures aligned with expert advice hold the key to mitigating heatwave impacts.

IMD flags heatwave threats in the Himalayas, Odisha, coastal Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra—potentially extending 2-4 extra days. Mid-May and late-May surges could worsen scenarios in northwest, central, western India, and east coast.

Nighttime warmth, especially in cities and by the sea, will compound the challenge. Humid heat looms over eastern coasts, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

Agriculture benefits include ideal harvesting weather for rabi crops up north. Conversely, heat could hit boro paddy, corn, and lentils in south and northeast.

Agricultural tips: Work fields at dawn or dusk, irrigate sparingly but often, secure animals. Nationally, authorities are geared up—ensuring water, shade, and power for the vulnerable, from kids to laborers.
