In a bold step towards self-reliant defense capabilities, India’s Ministry of Defence has finalized a landmark ₹975 crore agreement with BEML Limited and Electropneumatics & Hydraulics (India) Private Limited. The contract, signed on Tuesday, will equip T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks with advanced TRAWL assemblies, revolutionizing the Army’s minefield traversal prowess.
The DRDO-developed TRAWL system is engineered to create safe corridors through densely mined zones, tackling sophisticated threats like anti-tank mines fitted with magnetic fuses. This upgrade promises to dramatically elevate the Indian Army’s tactical flexibility, allowing armored units to advance with reduced vulnerability in combat scenarios.
Presided over by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the signing ceremony emphasized the deal’s role in bolstering national security. Beyond military enhancement, it champions the Make in India vision by fostering growth in domestic industries, particularly MSMEs, and creating substantial job prospects.
As border tensions persist, such procurements are vital for maintaining operational superiority. The TRAWL integration will enable faster breaches of enemy defenses, safeguarding lives and accelerating mission success rates.
Echoing this momentum, the Ministry recently approved a massive ₹1,950 crore deal with BEL for Mountain Radars tailored for the Air Force. Announced on March 31, this contract includes radars, ancillary gear, and infrastructure to sharpen high-altitude monitoring, aligning perfectly with Atmanirbhar Bharat goals.
Collectively, these contracts signal a strategic pivot towards indigenous innovation, reducing import dependency while empowering local talent. India’s defense apparatus is gearing up for future conflicts with cutting-edge, home-produced solutions.
