PUNE: Sawan Barwal, a dedicated Havildar in the Indian Army, made headlines by smashing India’s national marathon record after 48 long years during the NN Rotterdam Marathon. His time of 2:11:58 placed him 20th among world-class competitors, eclipsing Shivnath Singh’s 1978 benchmark of 2:12:00.

The event in the Netherlands on April 12 was dominated by Ethiopian star Guei Idemo Adola, who crossed the finish line in 2:03:54. Fellow Indian T. Gopi followed closely, timing 2:13:16 for 23rd spot. This feat automatically secures Sawan’s spot at the Asian Games, a major boost for India’s athletics contingent.

Back home, Sawan opened up about his breakthrough. ‘Young athletes are training harder than ever. My debut taught me volumes,’ he told the media on Wednesday. Highlighting the pivotal role of sports science, he noted, ‘It’s 30-40% of modern training—nutrition, recovery, everything.’

Recounting his evolution, Sawan contrasted sparse resources in his state with the Army Sports Institute’s advanced support. ‘I learned from elite runners how to train smart, prevent injuries, and maintain body balance. One injury can derail a whole year,’ he explained. With Asian Games as his primary goal, Sawan’s story is a testament to perseverance, positioning him as a role model for aspiring runners across India.
