Sri Lanka Cricket has dropped a major update for cricket enthusiasts: the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 edition will run from July 10 to August 5. This reshuffle from its initial December 2025 slot accommodates preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which Sri Lanka will co-host.

The decision reflects meticulous planning to ready host venues months ahead, avoiding any clash with the World Cup buildup. SLC’s announcement on Wednesday also revealed that an online portal for foreign player registrations launches on May 4, setting the stage for explosive team auctions.

A total of 24 matches await, comprising 20 league fixtures where each of the five franchises faces off twice, and four high-stakes playoffs. The top four teams progress to determine the champion through a proven knockout structure.

Qualifier 1 features the league leaders against the second-placed side; victory here means a straight finals ticket. The Eliminator sees third versus fourth, with the winner advancing to Qualifier 2 against Qualifier 1’s defeated team to earn the other finals place.

The action spans four world-class stadiums: Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club and R. Premadasa International Stadium, Kandy’s Pallekele International Stadium, and Dambulla’s Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. These venues have become synonymous with LPL’s vibrant atmosphere.

Launched in 2020 amid challenging times, LPL quickly rose to prominence. Galle Stallions won the debut season, Jaffna Kings followed with back-to-back titles in 2021-22 and 2024, and B-Love Candy reigned in 2023. The league’s growth has attracted top global talent, cementing its spot on the T20 calendar.

As the countdown begins, LPL 2026 is poised to deliver unforgettable rivalries, six-hitting spectacles, and emerging stars ready to shine on the big stage.
