In a significant push towards youth empowerment, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated a state-of-the-art sports facility in Umlingka on Saturday, calling it the ‘most vital investment’ for the state’s tomorrow. The event underscores the government’s focus on grassroots sports development.
Attendees included key local leaders like R.V. Lyngdoh and Hamletson Dohling, alongside sports officials and community representatives from Dorbar Shnong. Thousands of locals turned up to witness the launch of the Rs 3.5 crore advanced playground and indoor stadium.
Addressing the crowd, Sangma detailed how his administration has been working tirelessly for equitable growth across Meghalaya’s diverse regions. He advocated for a responsive governance model that addresses citizen needs and extends development uniformly.
‘Beyond grand infrastructure, our real priority is human capital – especially our youth,’ the CM asserted. He framed the new facility not as a cost, but as a legacy-building endeavor that will produce disciplined sports enthusiasts ready to conquer various fields.
The government’s comprehensive sports agenda includes building infrastructure and providing policy backing to nurture talent. Sangma encouraged aspiring athletes to leverage these opportunities for national and international success.
Praising the youth, he called for community stewardship to maintain the venue’s upkeep. The complex boasts modern amenities like badminton courts, changing areas, restrooms, and administrative offices.
This initiative will serve over 3,000 young people and four nearby schools, marking a milestone in Meghalaya’s sports journey. As the state eyes a sportier future, such investments signal a commitment to holistic youth development.
