Security forces struck a major blow against ULFA-I insurgents Friday, apprehending three operatives in a high-stakes raid in Mon district, Nagaland. Assam Rifles troops, tipped off by intelligence, zeroed in on the Phomching area’s Shangnyu village, where the militants were heading.
The captured men—Gajendra Asom, a 35-year-old self-proclaimed lieutenant from Tezpur; 27-year-old Lance Corporal Brojen Asom from Jorhat; and 26-year-old Sergeant Puhor Asom from Golaghat—have deep roots in ULFA-I. Their join dates reveal long-term commitment: Gajendra since 2011, Puhor from 2019, and Brojen in 2022. Four grenades seized from them point to plans for potential attacks.
This bust is part of a broader crackdown. Just prior, Charaideva police detained Wang alias Noni in Namtola, Sonari, for suspected courier and support roles for ULFA-I. In Tinsukia, a sweep netted seven more suspects: Barlin Niyog and Mithu Gohain from Bordumsa and Pengri, Lilambar Moran, Kakopathar’s Bikash Deka, Arunachal’s Shiba and Paritosh Deb, and Makum’s Manob Deb.
Police sources indicate these individuals exchanged intelligence with the outfit over years. Coordinated raids across sites have led to their custody, with interrogations probing network extents and involvement depths.
As Northeast India grapples with militancy, such operations signal strengthened resolve. Security apparatus remains on high alert, vowing to eradicate ULFA-I’s remnants and safeguard the region from terror.
