Jharkhand’s elephant crisis deepens as wild herds claim more victims, highlighting the state’s struggle with surging wildlife incursions. Tuesday’s horror unfolded at a Koderma brick kiln in Kanjiyadih, where a elephant herd demolished makeshift homes, killing migrant worker Rajkumar Manjhi, 32, from Bihar, and young Lavkush, 12. Three others—Gauri Devi, Kari Devi, and a toddler—remain hospitalized with grievous wounds from the assault.

Villagers erupted in protests, blocking roads and slamming the forest department for inaction amid ongoing elephant presence. Just three days prior, a fatal attack in Satgawan had ignited similar outrage, with locals demanding swift intervention.

Shifting to Saraikela-Kharsawan, a rogue elephant terrorized Tiruldih late Tuesday, raiding a school for 1.5 quintals of mid-day meal rice before ravaging farmlands in Bana. Banana plantations, vegetable patches, and cucumber fields lay ruined, compounding losses for already beleaguered farmers.

For years, Chandil sub-division has borne the brunt of elephant depredations, with herds settling in forests by day and pillaging villages by night. Sleepless families stand guard, their lives upended by the fear of sudden raids. Conservationists warn that without corridor restoration and anti-poaching vigilance, these clashes will intensify, threatening both elephant populations and rural economies. Urgent calls grow for solar fencing, early warning systems, and fair payouts to restore fragile peace.
