Colombo’s port buzzed with activity as INS Nirvikhak, India’s specialized diving support vessel, arrived to spearhead the latest Indo-Sri Lankan diving exercise. Launched on April 21, this fourth SLINEX-DIVEX edition will continue through April 27, focusing on high-stakes underwater operations.
The visit highlights evolving defense partnerships in the Indian Ocean. India marked the occasion with humanitarian aid: two advanced ‘Bishma Cube’ portable medical units handed over via ‘Aarogya Maitri’. These compact facilities pack life-saving gear for immediate use in crises, capable of treating 200 individuals with drugs, basic procedures, and surgical tools.
In a parallel move, 50,000 rounds of 9mm rifle ammunition will bolster Sri Lanka’s naval arsenal, reinforcing joint maritime security efforts. Divers from both navies will tackle complex scenarios like deep-water rescues, technical diving, and submersible escapes, aiming to refine coordination and operational know-how.
Sri Lankan forces extended a grand reception to the Indian ship, featuring naval bands and honors that reflect enduring camaraderie. Commander Salesh Tyagi’s discussions with Rear Admiral S J Kumara covered key areas of naval collaboration.
The program extends to off-duty engagements—sports, cultural meets, and yoga—to build rapport at the grassroots level. Long-standing exercises like this not only sharpen skills but also advance stability across the region, embodying India’s commitment to a secure SAGAR neighborhood. Defense analysts praise it as a milestone in mutual confidence-building.
