Bhopal’s cabinet room echoed with farmer-friendly resolutions as Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s team approved a fourfold increase in compensation for rural land acquisitions. This bold policy tweak comes amid ongoing demands from agricultural communities and sets a new benchmark for state-led development projects.

Narendra Shivaji Patel, a state minister, shared the details post-meeting, noting that the revision directly responds to persistent calls from farmers’ groups. Under the updated norms, any rural land taken for public or governmental construction—be it roads, dams, or schools—will now fetch owners four times the earlier rate.

Drawing authority from central land acquisition laws, Madhya Pradesh has exercised its discretion to prioritize landowner rights. In parallel, the cabinet greenlit Rs 33,000 crore in construction initiatives, with a lion’s share directed towards irrigation expansion. The target: irrigating 2 lakh more hectares to transform arid farmlands into productive fields.

Patel outlined the funding breakdown for these irrigation drives and other builds, painting a picture of accelerated rural development. Education gets a boost too, with the free bicycle program for 6th and 9th graders extended over five years, easing school commutes for thousands. Healthcare infrastructure receives fresh allocations, aiming for better accessibility in remote regions.

As the state gears up for these mega projects, the compensation hike stands out as a win for equity. It balances rapid infrastructure growth with fair remuneration, fostering trust between the government and its rural backbone—the farmers.
